Nervous System
The nervous system is a system controlled by the brain that allows nerves to work in different parts of the body. It uses neurons to control electrochemical impulses in different parts of the body. There are three types of neurons, Afferent Neurons, Efferent Neurons, and Inter-neurons. Neuroglia are the helper cells of the nervous system. The brain stem runs down through the spine and branch off into the different parts of the body.
Neurons are the B.I.P.S. in the brain. This stands for “basic information processing structures”. These are found in the brain and act like little on and off switches for basic functions the human body does. Beside using electricity like many on and off switches use, neurons use electrochemical impulses to send messages to different parts of the body to either move or stop moving. These impulses can function everything from the move of an arm, to the release of a chemical in the brain to make emotions.
Shell shock affected the way people on the front lines acted. The constant stress of war would were down on the soldiers body, and mind. Because the neurons in the brain would be overworked, they wouldn't be able to work properly and the brain would get all messed up. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder was a condition where the soldier was in a war for a while and his brain gets so used to it that when he or she goes back to civilization, his brain cannot function the way it is supposed to. The neurons are hardwired to war and they can’t go back to the way they are supposed to. They are stuck in the “on” position.
