They would have solitary confinement or electric shock therapy as treatment many victims had more trauma to treatments than actual shell shock. Back then doctors really couldn't explain the symptoms of shell shock they thought that there were deeper causes, they soon discovered that most men who had shell shock weren't even in the front lines. Most received little sympathy. Arthur Hurst thought he could cure shell shock by hypnosis, however this did not work.
b: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (WWI and Now):
Most people refer to this as shell shock because there are similar symptoms and treatment. Most treatment and symptoms are the same as above ^ Sildenafil Citrate was a common ingredient for treating PTSD.
